Norlie Meimban champions sustainable art in 20th solo exhibition at Newport Mall Resorts World Manila
MMDA Chairman Benhur Abalos, Norlie Meimban, and Dexter Matilla
For this show, Norlie is establishing himself as someone who champions sustainable art, using discarded VHS tapes, cassettes, vinyl, CDS, and even beer cans to recreate iconic images of popular icons throughout history including Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, Michael Jackson, Jimi Hendrix, Mona Lisa, and Charlie Chaplin.
Norlie says that the most challenging thing about creating sustainable art is the process of gathering all the non-biodegradable materials and transforming them into something artistic.
"I was inspired to explore sustainable art because of our problem with trash," Norlie says. "We experienced flooding in Marikina and this what gave me the idea to create this type of art."
Norlie is a three-time winner of the Metrobank Foundation Art Competition and the Juror's Choice Award of the GSIS Art Competition in 2009. This award-winning artist staged solo and group exhibitions in notable galleries in the Philippines and the USA, Singapore, Malaysia, and Hong Kong. His most recent exhibit, "Art Reunited" was hosted by the International Cultural Diversity Organization (ICDO) in Vienna, Austria.
Norlie Meimban's exhibit is part of the Grand Charity Christmas Mall-seum and it may be viewed until today Nov 23, 2021 at the 2nd floor Garden Wing of the Newport Mall at Resorts World Manila in Pasay just outside Rafael's Tapas Bar and Restaurant. Proceeds from sale of artworks will benefit the Concordia Children Services and San Lorenzo Ruiz Home for the Elderly.
